Castle In the Sand

She’s a hint of a smile and a trembling tear

A castle in the sand

She’s built up walls and is fearful of the tide

This I understand

I met a girl who was looking out

Trying to make it right

We became friends through experience

I asked her could I spend the night

And all my feelings for her

Were just the games I always played

I thought I had the key to open her door

There never was another way

I don’t know, but it mattered not to me

She turned to me with a face drawn pale

Memories no one should know

I wanted her to love me but I wanted her to smile

So I just let it go

We sat around and talked for a spell

She told me off her life

She’d been in love and she had known some death

No longer now a wife

And all my feelings for her

I’ll just put them all away

You don’t want clutter in a crowded heart

Too high the price to pay

And I don’t know, I guess it mattered not to me

Yes, but sometimes I still wonder where she is

Fragments of that life fell to earth as this

As the night wore on and we became friends

I could plainly see

I’d walked in past those sandy gates

Of her castle by the sea

She met me in her courtyard's sun

And offered me a rose

You came inside but it still hurts too much

It’s time for you go

And all my feelings for her

I can’t just put them all away

I’m just a stranger in the distance

Maybe some other day

And I don’t know, but it matters much to me

Children Feel

Children feel the crush of time

But they are young so they don’t seem to mind

It’s what they miss that brings them down

I have learned to catch the spell

Tried for heaven, lived a bit of hell

It’s hard but it could bring you ‘round

You were lost at seventeen

To gone to call out, deep within a dream

I found it hard to weep for you

There was laughter from the hall

You had tried but could not take them all

Either way it looked to me you’d lose

To see you standing there, suitcase in your hand

You tried to tell me something but you don’t understand

Time can heal the worst of wounds

Redeem a saint, replace the silver spoon

But you had trouble coming true

Was it a game to mystify

Or just the way to live an endless lie?

My Lover's Shells

My lover has tiny shells

She wears strung around her neck

From a place and time

That came long before me

I wonder what she has seen

In her time when the shells were new

And who it was that first told her

How beautiful they looked upon her

One hundred and thirty-one tiny shells

Joined together by a leather thread

Mostly they are black

But for the red, yellow and green of the Rastafarian

Maybe it’s the island

That causes me to feel

Some sort of mysticism, because

I can sense a song within them

I’ve seen my lover

In gowns and blouses, jeans and coveralls

But the tiny shells add the perfect touch

When they alone adorn her

Can I Bum A …

I wish I could smoke

even now

I can remember

the first cigarette

that I ever smoked

it was good, right from the start

and it lay burning, in the road

and I picked it up off the street

someone had thrown it from a car

my friend Tim was quite impressed

how’d you know it was lit

he said

just one of those little talents

that will get me

through this life

I suppose

that cigarette wasn’t the first thing

we ever smoked

hell no, that would have been

the famous and incredible

Beastal cigarette

a hollow stalk

that grew freely

in the fields we roamed

as pre-pubescent savages  

it was woody on the outside

and kind of spongy on the inside

and smoked like hell and

blew a hole in the back of your head

but the flavour wasn’t so bad

and we’d smoke these

while we built our forts

and guided our rafts

through the cedar swamps

of the West Island

But I can’t smoke now

or at least I’m not prepared to pay the price

which is too bad

but in my case

with these crappy lungs I’ve got

I’ll abuse my liver

and your patience

instead

Fun With Tourists

do you know what a

landau roof is?

they take a normal car

and throw some vinyl

(probably supposed to be leather)

over the back half of the roof

it’s supposed to be a mark of distinction

but I don’t know if everyone

appreciates the subtleties

of all that craftsmanship

don’t ever take a landau roof

through one of those African wildlife parks

though I will admit to you

it’s pretty damn funny

being the car behind the landau

watching the baboons

strip the vinyl off the car

whilst the driver

is stuck in tourist trap traffic jam

sweating, with his windows rolled up

you see, if he got out of his car

the baboons would most likely

kill him

and his family

which myself, I’d rather not see

it’s not that different

from what some parts of town

are like

on those bad days

it’s their place

and after all

fun is fun
